History of Samastipur

The Oinwar dynasty, which is also known as the Sugauna dynasty were the rulers of the Mithila region during 1353 and 1525/1526AD and were preceded by the Karnat dynasty. After the end of their reign, it left them unruled for 30 years with lawlessness and resulted in the emergence of Raj Darbhanga also known as the Kameshwar Thakur or Sugauna dynasty. These rulers were not much disturbed by the Mughal Emperors until Hazi Ilyas of Bengal divided Tirhut into two parts.

Arts and Philosophy

Arts and Philosophy flourished in the reign of Oinwaras and their court served as the centre of Sanskrit belle’s letters and Philosophy. Gadhadhar, Sankar, Vachaspati Mishra, Vidyapati, Amartkar and Amikyar were among the prominent scholar of that age. The founder of the dynasty was Maharaja Kameshwar Singh, who was a resident of the village Oini near Pusa road now in Darbhanga district.
