Salar Jung Museum

Salar Jung Museum is one of the best places to visit in Hyderabad. It has a very large number of artifacts stored in it. These archaeological evidences are from many parts of the world. It is one of the best places to visit specially for the students in Hyderabad.

About Salar Jung Museum

This was originally a private art collection for the Salar Jung family which was inaugurated for the public on 16th Dec 1951 after the death of Salar Jung |||. It is one of the three National Museums of India and one of the largest museums in the world.

It has a collection of paintings, sculptures, manuscripts, textiles, ceramics, artifacts, clocks, carpets and furniture from different countries. There is a Photo Section, Education Wing, Chemical Conservation Laboratory and a Display section.

Monday – Saturday (10 a.m – 5 p.m). Friday closed.

Entry fee:-

  • ₹ 20 per head for Indian tourists.
  • ₹ 500 per head for foreign tourists.
  • For students and children below 18 years of year, it is free. Students need a valid identity card to avail free entry.
  • There is also a 50% concession for defense personnel in uniform and kisan parties.
  • General public are also given concession on entry ticket during the Museum Week, which is from 8th – 14th January every year.

Best route to Salar Jung Musuem

Bike would be the best option if you want to reach faster due to the traffic in the city and the Museum area mainly. Parking space is available there outside the Museum. It is also well connected with Metro, so you can use this to travel cheaper and is convenient too.

Distance from the city?

It is almost 17km from Hitech city and takes almost 35mins to reach by road so make your plans to visit accordingly.

How much time it generally takes to explore the museum?

The museum is 3rd largest museum in India and has much more than you could have expected. So make sure that you keep not less than 2-3 hrs for it at least, however you can spend even more as it has that potential to take your time. I would suggest you to visit the Museum in morning before other destinations and then make your plans according to the time you have lest in the day.

It has a total of 38 galleries divided into 3 blocks namely;

  • The Eastern block:- It consist of 4 galleries. It consists of rare objects from Japan, Burma, China, Thailand, Korea, Nepal, Indonesia, Syria, Persia, Arabia and Egypt.
  • The Western block: – It has 7 galleries. This section of the gallery display objects from countries like France, Italy, Belgium, Germany, Czechoslovakia, Austria, England and Ireland.
  • The Indian block: – It has the most number of galleries i.e., 27. This section includes collections from Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Tamilnadu, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Orissa, Maharashtra, Kerala, Punjab, Rajasthan, Gujarat, West Bengal, Jammu & Kashmir etc.

The museum organizes various workshops and exhibitions by collaborating with International museums and organizations. They are specially organized on specific occasions such as birthday of Salar Jung I, Museum Week, Children’s Week, etc.

It also publishes books in English, Urdu and Hindi languages as well as guide books, research journals and brochures, offering a complete understanding of the museum and the history behind it. More about the museum can be found it’s official website.
