Saharsa is the land of Mandan Mishra and his wife Bharti, one of the renowned scholars of their time who had the opportunity to debate with Adi Shankracharya. The name of the city came from the Sanskrit Word (सहर्ष) Saharsha, which means ‘laden with joy.’ Situated in the eastern part of the state of Bihar on the eastern banks of the river Kosi.
Saharsa is less than 400km away from the Nepal border however some of the places of Nepal are less than 100km like the Rajbiraj Airport is only 102 km away from the city. How To Reach Saharsa?
The nearest Airport is Darbhanga almost 97 km far and the distance can be covered in less than 3 hrs by road. One can also use trains for Darbhanga. Another airport, the Rajbiraj Airport is almost 100km away and Shree Airlines operated between Rajbirar and Kathmandu. Another best way to visit Saharsa is Indian Railways as the Saharsa junction is well connected by trains.
A Brief History Of Saharsa
The city came into existence as a district on the 1st of April 1954. Earlier the district used to be under the Bhagalpur division later with the formation of the Kosi division on 2nd October 1972, along with Purnia and Katihar, it came under the Kosi division.
Saharsa is part of the kingdom established Mithila Kingdom, well known as the Kingdom of Videhas. Vaishali was the capital of the Vajji confederacy in Mithila, this confederacy included the Videhas which was the first known democracy in the world.
