Myths and legends about Charminar

It is believed that the structure along with its intricate carvings was built in the honor of his wife, Bhagmati.

  • Another legend suggests it was built to mark the end of the plague which had severely affected the people of that region, dedicated to Allah or the first four caliphs of Islam.
  • There is another legend associated with its design (which is probably considered to be shaped as Shiya Tazia) that was built in the memory of Prophet Mohammad’s son-in-law who died in the battle of Karbala.
  • It is also believed that it was either to commemorate the start of the second Islamic millennium or it was built as an epicentre of Hyderabad.

• Another legend suggests that there is a secret underground tunnel that connects Charminar to the Golconda Fort. It was built out of security concerns that in case of an emergency the royal family could escape this way.
