Dwarka

Dwarka/ Dwarkamati/Dwarkavati/Mokshapuri is a city in Gujarat, a Western state of India. It is a part of the Char Dham Yatra along with Rameswaram, Jagannath puri and Badrinath and a major Sapta Puri (seven holy towns). It holds a major religious significance in Hindus especially in the Vaishnava sect.

Dwarka finds it’s mention in the epic “Mahabharata“. It is mentioned that after killing Kansa, Krishna left for the city of Dwarka and settled there along with his followers. The Yadava kingdom was established there and the city eventually came to be known as “Kaushathali“.

The weather of Dwarka is little hot due to it’s location and also humid. It is best to avoid the rainy season and the peak summer too. Apart from that, you can visit this place anytime in the year. Although the Krishna Janamashtami is very famous here. So that is one of the best time to plan for your visit.

Origin and History of Dwarka

The main Dwarkadhish temple was built around 2500 years ago and faced many destructions and loots. However, it was always rebuilt and thus the present structure stands. The Dwarka math built by Adi Shankaracharya is also situated here. People believe that Lord Viswakarma (God of construction) constructed in 2 days. Later the city was called as the “Suvarna Dwarka” (Golden city).

According to legends Lord Krishna after arriving to Dwarka with his followers prayed to Samudra Deva (Sea God) to give him some land in order to build his city. It is believed that Lord Krishna used to stay at Bet Dwarka. And it is also believed that the day Lord Krishna left his mortal body, the city also submerged under the sea. This city is also known as “The Atlantis of India”.

The Lost city of India?

Many archaeological excavations have been done under water in search of the lost city. The first was in 1963 and the search is still ongoing. The excavations prove the legends to be true. The temple is believed to be constructed by the grandson of Lord Krishna, Vajranabha.
