The name “Hrishikesh” is attributed to Lord Vishnu. “Hrishik” means “senses” and “esh” means “Lord” which literally translates to “Lord of the senses”. It is said that Lord Vishnu appeared in front of Raibhya Rishi as a result of his deep meditation and devotion towards him.
In the Skanda Purana the town is also mentioned as “Kubjamrak” as it is said that Lord Vishnu appeared under a mango tree.
